Radiants - HUD Elements

One of the first mods created for Fallout New Vegas was HUD - oHUD, (fully modifiable HUD). The purpose of HUD was to add more personalization to the game, to help people get a better feel of what their character looked like, with all the visual data associated with that character already in front of them. This mod went through quite a few changes over the years, but one thing that never really changed - the ability to add new HUD elements to the game. That is, until we found mods that actually took this to the next level.

One such mod, called Radiants, was developed by user Gopher - who has made a number of other high quality mods for the game. Radiants features a new city called Spring Canyon, which is basically Spring, Nevada with a couple of different sections, including the Divide. This adds an entirely new city to the game and adds several new elements, such as a brand new city airport, power stations, a casino, and many others.

One of the most interesting things about Radiants, however, is that it actually modifies the game's code in order to add new HUD elements around the map. This is done by changing the existing geometry and model information, so that the elements no longer blend together in the corner of the screen. It's a subtle effect, but it makes the world look more life-like, as well as changing the way that players move around the environment. This is accomplished by adding new grid lines that divide the world into two separate regions, and by modifying the way that these lines interact with the player-character's location in the environment. For example, you can move a little faster across the map, but if you're moving east-west rather than north south, you'll see that the speed limit does not alter. These changes, while not entirely necessary to the gameplay, are rather nice to have, and really go a long way towards making Radiants a well-made and fun game to play.
